can we all stay off jalopnik for a month. The site is horrible now. Also posting to oppo is awful. Anyone else want to join me? Let’s make them listen.
Ive been reading since 2005 and it just keeps getting worse. Other than Jason their writers suck. Its a low paying job for newbies that have to move on. Its more adds that articles.
Either way FUCK JALOPNIK IM DONE

I haven’t read Jalopnik in years really. Only occasionally read Torch and Orlove articles and watch their videos.

I went from reading Jalopnik/FoxtrotAlpa/CheckeredFlag daily... then weekly... now I just check the FP headlines on the weeke nd and maybe read one article. So yeah, they are 1/21 the site they used to be, but i have hope the pendulum will eventually swing back the other way (not so sure about Giz, though)

I think I read one article in the last two weeks. It’s... meh. I’m only around Oppo for the people.

Jalopnik does suck but boycotting Oppo would just encourage them to delete us entirely.

I would argue that the writing on Jalo has improved markedly. As well, spamming us with crap from the FP has caused me to see more of their posts, and a few of them have actually not been moronic. But as smobgirl says below, boycotting Oppo is probably what they’d prefer.

Disappearing the authors’ handles has really diluted the experience. I’ve been on enough years that I know whose post I’m looking at fairly often, but still. If they’re trying to wear us down, it could quite possibly work.

Torch has another imaginary car from an imaginary country article up about something that against all odds actually kinda existed in real life so that’s worth checking in for. Somehow the site runs worse on my computer than mobile.

Jason and David are the only writers I come back for. And I just read their article about why they didn’t review the manual Genesis G70; they were basically saying it’s too weird to have a manual in a luxury car and they couldn’t think of what to compare it to so they felt like it shouldn’t have had the option. Like, what the frick Jalopnik? Whatever happened to giving a crap about unusual and unique cars? A vehicle being different and fitting into an unusual market segment isn’t necessarily a bad thing! Jalopnik (with the exception of Jason and David) just isn’t “jalop” anymore. The site I loved no longer exists. And with how they don’t seem to care about us remnant Kinja users who still post on Oppo and such, it looks like the future of Oppo is uncertain. I just hope that when Kinja does become 100% unusable, most of us are able to move somewhere else.

I agree. Jalopnik’s content has very much improved under the new editor though they have yet to draw in any real new talent. It feels more focused and actually, well, edited in way I really missed. If only the herbs would let their UI make sense.

It’s irritating, but I’m usually here to kill time anyway so now I just open all the articles. Maybe it’s driving up views?
![]() 09/19/2020 at 17:32 |

This is true. The content isn’t what kills me, it’s being stuck in a login loop plus the absolute idiocy allowed in the comments. It used to be a fun place for more car-related discussions.

Like when it didn’t take a minute to navigate to someone responding to your comment. Still, things have been looking up for the site lately and I hope things continue to improve.

Same here. I just can’t get into the new FP layout. As a result, I’v e maybe gone on the site once or twice over the past week instead of multiple times a day.

Hmm. I might have to give them a try again

I don't really go on the FP much at all, about 80% of the articles are of no interest at all to me. I would be happy to go and check out the 1 in 5 I do like - e.g., Torchinsky and Tracy, but the comments take forever to load, if they do at all, and the whole page just loads real slow and glitchy and bogs down my browser. They've said they fixed it several times, but it never seems to improve. Somehow, none of that happens on OPPO. It's just too frustrating to use, so I don't go there at all.

Keep expectations for computer performance low.

Yeah, it’s a sad state of affairs right now.
I’m going to stick around Oppo, but the rest of Kinja has more or less lost me entirely.

Ba sically fine. Struggling a little in Differential Calculus and have a lot of work to do in some other classes but it’s gone well so far. I’m really settling into the swing of things. Thanks for asking.
How are things with your new grandchild?

Oh, I disagree. The oppo posting hasn’ t changed other than the photo attribution requirement. But that is a business necessity, so what can you do?
As for Jalopnic, I actually don’t mind the layout change. The only thing I really disagree is the bleedover posts from Jezebel and Root which I don’t find interesting. Its about as good as ever and I still find it better than Autoweek and Car and driver so I find it ok.
Whatever.....

It’s disheartening. I complain every month about the changes particularly in the past year.

I’ve visited a couple times this week and
stumbled
on a one off article from David Obuchowski linked above
; a eulogy to the awesome Jim Barbour. I was sad to find such few replies (and I know they’re few because David goes through the comment section and responds to like 90% of comments, so almost half the comments are his). His more freelance
writing
and subjects are
some of the best I’ve
ever seen on Jalopnik and remain years later
.
BC Oppos also had the pleasure of meeting him (and each other) set-up by CoFL a few years back.

I still think if we all complained we could get them to fix that....I’m going to go and make another complaint on Kinja support...

I gave up on Giz, and am like 90% off jalopnik.
Are there any kinja sites worth reading anymore? All the good writers left (except torch). Road&track and theDrive are much better these days.

That layout complaint is entirely negated by making https://jalopnik.com/latest your Jalopnik bookmark.

The complaints about cross-posting from other parts of the Kinjaverse always make me laugh. How tough is it to simply scroll past, or are you in some Clockwork Orange -esque situation where you’re being forced to consume content you don’t care for?

If you’ve been reading from 2005, then you’d understand that “ Its a low paying job for newbies that have to move on.” is actually one the main tenets of Jalopnik. How many big names have started from here and moved on? Doug? Hoovie? Okluksi is the editor in chief of R&T, that’s like the highest position you can get as a auto journo. Google previous authors and see where they are, they’ve all moved onto better paying jobs! I don’t think Jalopnik has changed as much as the commenters in this post mention, albeit the focus on ad’s and revenue (because that’s how you survive now), I think you’re the one whos changed and the content doesn’t tickle you as it once has. It’s your perspective that you must either alter or move on. Either way, I don’t think anyone will miss you or any of us.

You might mention that now that they’re trolling spamming posting their FP crap headlines here, more of us are reading more of the FP rubbish content. Seriously, though.

So I’d install a plug-in to my browser that would cause authors’ names to reappear along with their posts?

Tech support is probably just turn it off if it stops working.

As someone that I enjoy regularly corresponding with here, and given our past correspondence, I’d be curious to know your thoughts regarding the sudden SCOTUS opening. For my part, I find myself feeling surprisingly not worked up about it.

It’s just no surprise how things are playing out. She was an incredibly impressive woman, but she just held on to the position for too long, in the end. Regardless of her personal wishes, the president and the Senate have the power to act, and they will . Are we supposed to be surprised that career politicians are liars and hypocrites?
Do I think Trump deserves to pick 3 SCOTUS judges? Hell no, but he never deserved the R
nomination or the presidency either. Ds have no one to blame but themselves for the last 4 years, honestly.

The Rs are looking very hypocritical today (and some as outright liars).
But f ound this history lesson:

This was the third Clinton term. And next year, if the Dems restructure and pack the SCOTUS, it’ll be the McConnell Court.
